Long time – No Post! Past 6 months.

Whew – I haven’t posted in a real long time, not because I haven’t been fishing but because I don’t have free time like I used to.  Bad excuse I know and I hope to post with more consistency this year.

I did want to post a little about this last summer/fall and get some new pictures up.  I spent a lot of time this last summer/fall fishing on Pool 2, the St Croix, shooting sporting clays, and working Maggie in the pheasant fields.  Here’s a quick run down of the past 6 months…

The Pool-2 walleye bite this past fall was fantastic!  My boat experienced a fantastic daytime bite from mid September all the way to ice up in late November.  This fall I didn’t spend any real time on the night bite – never felt I needed to and before we knew it, the river was iced up.  Main tactics I used were pretty typical – hair jigs and plastics.  Jimmy D’s Walleye Weenies worked fantastic and I think this fall I caught more fish on hair jigs than ever in the past.

St Croix River

We fished the Croix a decent amount with great success for both good sized fish and eaters.  We spent 99% of our time out there pulling cranks on leadcore.  The Limit Creek 8’6″ and 12′ rods have been awesome for fighting these fish and keeping our lines spread out.  The more I fish the Croix the more I understand how to better target these fish using cranks.  That said, once I think we have it figured out, we get handed some humble-pie and take a beating.  It’s always fun to get out there and pull cranks, regardless of our success.

Jon Boat

Sold my other camo boat and replaced it with this ‘new to me’ jon boat, 16′ 2004 Xpress.  I took the 40hp Yamaha off my old boat and put it on this boat.  The boat is setup awesome and has been perfect for my solo trips or quick jaunts down to Pool-2.

Superior National Forest Trip

Every year we take a trip up north to SNF in northern Minnesota – this year we chose a small 450acre lake.  Fishing was slow but expected as we encountered a drastic cold front the first day we arrived.  We still managed to get plenty of eater sized fish and I was fortunately enough to land a beautiful 31″ walleye, released to be caught another day.  Most fish were caught on either a jig/minnow combination or on a Rapala ShadRap pulled behind lead.

Pheasant Hunting

Pheasant hunting around my house was slower this year but it’s always fun to get out.  This fall we starting shooting Sporting Clays on a regular basis which really built my excitement for pheasant hunting.  I purchased a new shotgun, Benelli SuperSport 20g which also made shooting on a regular basis much more fun.  As usual, Maggie did very well hunting and as really turning out to be a great pheasant dog.  This last trip to South Dakota was probably her best, making awesome retrieves and putting up birds consistently in-range.

Deer Hunting

Deer hunting was pretty good this year.  Our party was able to fill our tags opening weekend.  Jim shot a nice 10pt and I shot a smaller 8pt.  I purchased an H&R Ultra Slug Hunter 20g this year that really opened my eyes to what slug guns can do.  Years past I was shooting smooth bore shotgun with iron sights and foster slugs.  This year with a good scope and sabbot slugs, I’m able to bullseye pretty consistently at 100+yards.  Dumped my buck at 87yards with 1 shot.

Figure I should give Kevin his own quick section – the little man that’s consuming my time.  Don’t get me wrong, he’s awesome but I’ve gained a new appreciation for parents and how much work little kids are.  I’m very fortunate to have a great wife so I’m still able to get out fishing and hunting but obviously am home a lot more than I used to be for him and to help out.  Soon enough as he grows, I hope to bring him out in the boat and in the field. :)

Sorry about some of the pictures – I didn’t spend the time to pick perfect ones but thought that raw pictures work better than words.  I’m missing a lot, especially from the fishing but I posted some of what I had here on my phone.

Here’s to a great 2015 – See ya on the water!
